The 21-year-old track and field athlete began running track in middle school. When his coach initially placed him in 800 meter events based on his build and size in sixth grade, he bombed every single one. Determined not to give up, Michael began to train for the next season and did well for the rest of his middle school years in 200 through 800 meter events.

In high school, Michael tried his hand at football, but found that his calling was for track and field. He was ranked all state and attended regional meets on a regular basis. It was there that he found out his future coach had been watching him running for the past two years. Soon after, he signed a contract to attend East Carolina, where he says he's excited about the prospect of being at a school with both an Olympic coach and Olympic gold medalist.
