Old Habits....

Last week was not a good week. I missed most of my scheduled workouts, I didn't eat well...etc.

Isn't it interesting that its so easy to fall back into old habits and so hard to start new ones?

One would think that, with all the resolve with which we tackle new routines and self-improvement projects, that we would crush the old routines and habits easily. But, alas, this is not so...as evidenced by my week last week.

It kind of reminds me of the point in our history when our roads were dirt and mud. Wagon wheels tracked easily in the ruts left by other coaches and wagons, but if a wagon needed to go a different route, or if the ground was just a little soft, it was harder going for the driver of the cart. The wheels would get stuck, or the vehicle would slide back into the old path. Sometimes, the cart would even tip over - causing a delay and a back up on the road.

I guess that's the way life works too. Once you get comfy, its hard to step out of that comfort zone and make a new path. We frequently slip back into the old habits and have to fight to get back on the new track.

Thankfully its easier for us than for the carts of old. We can't tip over - we just have to persevere. We have to fight to stay the course, making sure that the one slip doesn't trickle into a month of slips. Vigilance is our horse, determination our driver.

SO, like the pioneers before me, I pick up the reigns again and start fresh.

Monday I finished Day 1 of Week 4 for the C25k and knocked out 25 sit-ups. Yesterday, I fell on my front stoop and banged my knee up. It was pretty swollen, so I opted to ice it and take a rest day to prevent further injury. I also prayed that it would only be bruised - I've broken my kneecap before and didn't want a repeat.

Today I will tackle Day 2 of Week 4 and 25 more sit-ups. I also signed up for my first 5k of the season - I'm running with a friend, which helped my decision to take that leap.

Happy trails and upright carts!!
